REVIEW OF THE WEEK

GLENFIDDICH IPA EXPERIMENT

DISTILLER: Glenfiddich

region: Speyside

price: $90.20 (LCBO)

"Malt Master Brian Kinsman has proven that traditional whisky casks can still be seasoned in aa pioneering way. Collaborating with a local Speyside craft brewer, Brian created a bold and zesty IPA beer to imbue our rich oak casks with extra hoppy notes. The experiment resulted in the first single malt Scotch whisky ever finished in craft IPA casks."

George Says

COLOUR: Straw colour

LEGS: Very long legs, clings to the glass.

NOSE: Floral, apples, pears, orange peel, bourbon/sherry and hops.

PALATE: Very smooth, oily,  a bit of fruit, next to no tingle on the tongue. Citrus hops with a hint of caramel and oak.

FINISH: Long, malty and sweet.

FINAL WORDS: A pretty good whisky, one of my favourites in the Glenfiddich range. It’s not complex but has enough about it to make you want a second taste. Very good value for money.

COLOUR: Dark gold

LEGS: Very clingy. Excellent.

NOSE: Floral, vanilla, beeriness (hops), some nutmeg, hints of fruit (pears?)

PALATE: Smooth. Nice light mouthfeel and a bit mouth-tingling. Vanilla, oak, toffee, and malt. A bit of lemon.

FINISH: Lingers for a while. Balanced sweetness as it fades.

Final Words: Nice. It's an interesting whisky and a great experiment from Glenfiddich. The IPA flavours aren't overpowering, so it's a good balance. It's an excellent light whisky for finishing up a BBQ in the summer. And under $100.00!
